internships in Australian biotechnology

Why Australian Biotech? Ernst & Young ranks Australia as the number one biotechnology country in the Asia Pacific and sixth worldwide. KPMG reports that for biomedical R&D, Australia ranks second, after Canada, as the most cost-effective location. This is ahead of the US, UK and Germany, in terms of labour, salaries, utilities and income tax. Australia accounts for 3% of the world’s health and medical research, and has been the source of major breakthroughs in stem cell research, anti-viral vaccines and cancer treatments. The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), Australia’s national science agency, invested AU$110 million in biotechnology last year.

Since 2001, the number of core biotechnology organisations in Australia has grown from 200, to well over 400 today, according to Australia’s Biotechnology Organisation. Over 100 of these firms are listed on the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX), with their total revenue exceeding AU$3 billion.

Biotechnology company industry sectors:
➢ Biomedicine is the most dominant area
➢ 47% of Australia’s biotech companies work with human therapeutics
➢ 16% with agricultural biotechnology
➢ 14% are diagnostics firms
➢ There are also more than 600 medical devices companies.

internship itinerary

Step 1:
Students are encouraged to submit their applications as soon as possible and applications can be accepted at anytime prior to Monday, 5th April, 2010 for the 28th June – 1st August, 2010 internship program. The earlier, the better.

To apply, simply download and complete the application form below and submit wih the US$70 application fee (details on the application form) to:
Jim Galvin, UCSD Programs Abroad Office
9500 Gilman Drive, La Jolla, CA 92093-0018
Telephone: 858 534 1123
Email: jgalvin@ucsd.edu
Websites: http://pao.ucsd.edu

The Programs Abroad Office will also be able to provide you with any further information you may need to complete your application.

The student will then be interviewed by the Programs Abroad Office. If the student is deemed suitable for the program, their details will be forwarded to Phi Beta Dingo. If the student is not accepted by UCSD for the program, then their US$70 cheque will be returned to them along with the originals of their application form.

Step 2:
Once the student's details and non-refundable application fee have been received by Phi Beta Dingo, Phi Beta Dingo will contact the student for a skype interview. This interview is to help Phi Beta Dingo determine the best placement for the student and the student's aptitude for the program. If Phi Beta Dingo staff in Australia are confident that a suitable internship placement exists in Australia and the student meets the other requirements of the program, acceptance will be granted.

After being accepted to the program, the student will be sent an invoice for a non-refundable deposit of US$1,532.50 (50% of the total program fee) from Phi Beta Dingo and an invoice from UCSD for the US$100.00 administration fee. Payment of both invoices is required before the student's place is confirmed on the program.

If the student is not accepted onto the program by Phi Beta Dingo, they will be notified via email. The US$70 application fee is non-refundable.

Step 3:
Please note that as soon as a student is accepted, they can start their visa application and the earlier the application the better, providing plenty of time for the visa to be approved and time for Phi Beta Dingo Pty. Ltd. to receive documentation of the approved visa. For more information on how and when to apply for your visa, please click here.

After the student receives their visa, each student needs to fax Phi Beta Dingo copies of their valid U.S. passport (page with student photo, birth date, and passport expiration date) and copies of their valid Australian visa. (Students can also scan photocopies of the passport and visa and E-mail them to Phi Beta Dingo at: internships@phibetadingo.com).

Students must also obtain UC trip insurance. Information is available at: http://www.uctrips-insurance.org/

Step 4:
Upon receipt of the passport, visa and proof of insurance, Phi Beta Dingo will confirm via E-mail to the student that the student’s documents are all in order and that they are officially confirmed for the biotechnology internship program. With this E-mail an invoice for a non-refundable deposit of US$1,532.50 (remaining 50% of the total cost of the program) is included with payment information for payment via wire transfer to Phi Beta Dingo Pty. Ltd. (invoice to be paid within 14 days). This E-mail will also inform Student Universe that this student will be contacting them to arrange their international airfare and flights within Australia along the lines of the group booking.

Students should forward their flight information to Phi Beta Dingo once confirmed. Once the student's full payment is received, they will receive an email confirming that their account is 100% paid, and any relevant schedule and internship updates.

During this time Phi Beta Dingo will be working with the student to find the most appropriate internship placement in Sydney for the student that fits with the descriptions given on the student's application form and in the skype interview.

Saturday 26th June: Depart the U.S.
